M.A./M.Sc. Thesis
This program will lead to either an M.A. or an M.Sc. depending on the chosen specialization courses and the focus of the master’s thesis. Independent of their previous qualifications and the respective track, students who specialize in philosophy in the second year will receive an M.A.; students who specialize in computer science will receive an M.Sc. To specialize in computer science and receive an M.Sc., students need to choose specialization courses that lead to a computer science master thesis. All other students will receive an M.A. In potential borderline cases, the final decision lies with the examination board. Teachers offer ample support in guiding students on their personal path through the program.
Before students can begin a Master's thesis, they must apply for a degree. To do this, they must complete an application form and upload it to the Philosophy & Computer Science e-learning course. In this form, they must enter the provisional title of the thesis and the supervisor, who also signs the form. Students must also indicate here whether they wish to have an M.A. or an M.Sc. and indicate relevant courses for this choice. This choice is reviewed by the examination board and may, in exceptional cases, be overruled if the courses taken are not sufficiently relevant for the chosen degree. The form also includes the application for a specialization certificate (for more information, see here). Note that in addition to this application, the thesis supervisor must also register you in the university's online system.
In addition to a Master's thesis, a thesis seminar must also be completed. The seminar is thought each term by prof. Dr. Lena Kästner.
